"Have you ever managed to look well at Paulownia tree in front of Tesco at Kamenné square in Bratislava? The artists, enthousiasts, activists, passer by´s and even kids got a chance on 25th of may not only to look, but also to draw it. "Action Paulownia" was organised by artist Oto Hudec and a group Námestie pre ľudí (Square for People) with an aim to draw attention at one of the beautiful elements of the square otherwise destroyed by visual smog. Paulownia is threatened by cutting, as the owner of the property in cooperation with the city is planning a complete rebuilding of the space of today´s Tesco and Kyjev building complex. This time Paulownia was caught on paper - for any case - by approx. 15 skillful draftsmen. The chairs, drawing desks and material was ready for them to use - brought by organizers.
The action happened from , when a huge lightning hit the center of the city and made a symbolic end to the event.
Drawing from reality conceals a trait inside. It is not only some mechanic action, but a mean to discover, live and comunicate with the object. In artistic practice it is disappearing, being replaced by drawing from photography, pictures from books and internet. Action Pawlovnia had an aim to bring the participants for a short time into the present and into the streets. It also drew the attention of passer by´s towards the tree, that is often invisible for their eyes, when running from Tesco store with full bags. And it worked.
Those, who were present, but also those who wished, but couldn´t, showed an interest to repat the event, or even to do so periodically on different places. The organizers will be very happy for that!
We recommend to check the facebook page of group Námestie pre ľudí for future activities."
